How to Inspect Air Brakes on a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Before Shipment
A clean truck can still have air-brake issues. Here is what to inspect and record before you release the balance payment and load your truck.
Air brakes are central to the safe operation of a heavy truck. A HOWO or SHACMAN can look ready in photographs and still have problems in its compressor, air tanks, hoses, valves, chambers, brake adjustment, or warning system.
For a new, remanufactured, or refurbished truck, ask for a brake inspection that connects the physical vehicle to the agreed specification. It should establish the brake configuration, inspect visible components, confirm basic operation under controlled conditions, and record issues before balance payment and loading.
Start with the truck's use and legal requirements
State the intended work before ordering. A tractor unit on long highway routes, a dump truck on quarry roads, and a tanker working in city traffic each place different demands on the brake system. Give the expected payload, trailer or body type, road gradients, daily distance, surface conditions, and destination country.
Brake equipment and regulatory requirements can differ by configuration and market. Confirm steering side, axle arrangement, trailer connections, ABS where fitted, and any inspection or registration rule with a qualified destination authority or clearing agent before finalising the order.
Identify the exact chassis and brake arrangement
HOWO and SHACMAN model names do not identify one brake specification. Similar trucks can have different axle loads, air-tank capacity, compressor arrangement, brake chambers, valves, ABS layout, trailer couplings, and export equipment. Ask the supplier to state the chassis model, engine model, axle configuration, tyre size, brake type, ABS status where applicable, and chassis number when it has been assigned.

This is particularly important for remanufactured and refurbished vehicles, where the buyer should also request a clear list of brake components that are new, rebuilt, tested, repaired, or retained.
Follow the air path from compressor to brake chamber
Inspect the brake system as a connected path. The usual components include the engine-driven air compressor, air dryer where fitted, governor or pressure-control equipment, reservoirs, drain valves, pipes, flexible hoses, fittings, foot brake valve, relay valves, quick-release valves, brake chambers, slack adjusters, foundation brakes, and parking brake controls.
Ask for wide and close photographs of these components on the actual truck. A clean air tank does not show whether its drain valve works, whether a hose is rubbing against the frame, or whether a chamber has a damaged boot. Check that pipes and hoses are securely clipped, clear of sharp edges and heat sources, and not strained by steering or suspension travel.
Visible corrosion, crushed pipes, oil contamination, loose fittings, damaged hoses, or makeshift repairs should be recorded and explained before shipping.
Check compressor, dryer, and air reservoirs
The compressor must build air pressure reliably for the vehicle's stated configuration. Ask the inspector to record the time needed to raise pressure from the low-pressure warning range to normal operating range, following the vehicle manufacturer's procedure where available. The report should note the pressure readings, warning behaviour, and any unusual compressor noise or air leakage observed during the test.
If an air dryer is fitted, confirm its installation, connections, and service condition. Ask whether the filter cartridge was replaced, serviced, or retained during refurbishment. Record the dryer cartridge reference and discuss a first-service spare where appropriate.
Air reservoirs should be securely mounted and free from visible damage. Ask the inspector to open drain points safely and check for excessive water or oil contamination. The result should be recorded with care: some moisture may reflect operating conditions, while heavy contamination needs a proper explanation and corrective action before approval.
Inspect hoses, valves, chambers, and wheel-end brakes
Flexible hoses age, crack, and can fail from rubbing or poor routing. Inspect their outer condition, fittings, clips, and movement through steering and suspension travel. Check air chambers for corrosion, damaged diaphragms or boots, loose mounting, and damaged pushrods. Parking-brake spring chambers deserve particular attention because they store mechanical energy and should be handled only by trained personnel.
The foundation brake may be drum or disc depending on the axle and configuration. Ask for the brake type, lining or pad condition, drum or disc condition, visible leakage, wheel-end condition, and brake-adjustment check. Do not approve a general statement that the brakes were checked. Require the inspection report to identify the actual axle positions and the observations made.
For a remanufactured or refurbished truck, obtain evidence for the agreed brake work. This can include parts references, service records, photographs before and after work, and test notes. A fresh coat of paint on an axle is not evidence that brake wear items were replaced or adjusted correctly.
Test service brake, parking brake, and warnings
A controlled test should cover pressure build-up, low-air warning, service-brake application, parking-brake application and release, and visible leaks while the brakes are held. Where it is lawful, safe, and practical, request a short road test with an appropriately qualified driver. The test should confirm normal braking response, steering stability, warning lamps, and parking-brake holding behaviour on a suitable surface.
The report should state what was tested, the conditions, readings where available, and any limitation. A pre-shipment inspection reduces risk but does not replace destination commissioning, legal inspection, driver training, or maintenance.
Include these items in the pre-shipment inspection:
- Chassis number, axle configuration, tyre size, and brake type
- Compressor, air dryer, pressure-control components, and reservoir mounting
- Reservoir drain condition, pipes, flexible hoses, clips, and fittings
- Foot brake valve, relay valves, brake chambers, pushrods, and slack adjusters
- Wheel-end brake condition, visible leaks, and adjustment observations
- Low-air warning, gauges, ABS warning where fitted, service brake, and parking brake
- Photographs, pressure readings, road-test notes, and corrective work completed
Match brakes to trailer and body equipment

Plan brake service parts before loading
Keep a vehicle file with the chassis number, brake configuration, air-dryer cartridge reference, chamber type, hose sizes, valve references, lining or pad type, and tyre size. This information makes later parts sourcing more reliable than ordering from a generic truck badge.
