How to Inspect a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Electrical System Before Shipment

A short start-up video does not prove that a truck electrical system is ready for export. Here is what to inspect and record before loading.

A truck can start for a short video and still have electrical faults that become expensive after it reaches the destination. Batteries, charging equipment, starter wiring, lights, switches, connectors, fuses, sensors, and body circuits all need to work together. Poor cable routing or a weak earth connection can create intermittent faults that are difficult to diagnose once the truck is in service.

For a new, remanufactured, or refurbished HOWO or SHACMAN truck, inspect the electrical system as part of the assigned vehicle's pre-shipment review. The purpose is not to promise fault-free operation. It is to confirm the agreed configuration, identify visible defects, test essential functions, and record the condition before the balance payment and loading.

Start with the truck's job and destination rules

State the truck type, body equipment, trailer arrangement, route, and destination before asking for an electrical specification. A highway tractor, quarry tipper, tanker, mixer, and cargo truck can have different lighting, body-control, power-takeoff, trailer-socket, and auxiliary-power requirements.

Confirm the steering side, voltage system, lamp arrangement, reflective markings, rear protection, trailer connection, and any local inspection requirements with a qualified destination authority, workshop, or clearing agent. Do not rely on a generic export photograph. The order should identify the actual vehicle configuration that will be inspected and shipped.

Identify the exact chassis and electrical arrangement

HOWO and SHACMAN model names do not identify one electrical layout. Similar trucks can use different engines, dashboards, wiring looms, battery capacity, alternators, starter motors, ABS equipment, emissions sensors, body interfaces, and export options. Ask the supplier to record the chassis model, engine model, voltage, battery quantity and rating, alternator reference, starter reference, and any fitted auxiliary equipment.

When a chassis number has been assigned, link the inspection report, proforma invoice, photographs, and parts references to that number. The supplier should identify which electrical parts are new, repaired, tested, or retained.

Inspect batteries, isolation, and earth connections

Check the battery installation before looking at dashboard warnings. Batteries should be securely clamped, protected from unnecessary vibration, and accessible for service. Inspect the cases for cracks, leakage, damaged terminals, loose hold-downs, corroded connections, and missing terminal covers. Confirm the battery specification and production date where available.

Trace the main positive cables, battery isolator, starter cable, and earth straps. Heavy cables should be supported, protected from sharp edges and heat, and clear of moving components. An earth strap that looks intact can still have a poor connection at a painted or corroded mounting point, so ask the inspector to check visible connection points and record any cleaning or repair work.

For a truck that will work remotely, record battery and starter references in the vehicle file. A generic battery size is not enough for later replacement if the tray, terminal layout, or cable length differs.

Check charging and starting performance

The alternator must replenish the batteries after starting and while electrical loads are operating. Ask the inspector to record battery voltage before starting, cranking behaviour, and charging voltage with the engine running, using the manufacturer's procedure where available. Test with ordinary loads such as lights and blower operating if it is safe to do so.

The report should note slow cranking, abnormal starter noise, warning lamps that stay on, belt issues, loose alternator connections, or an unstable charging reading. A quick engine start is useful evidence, but it does not replace a basic charging-system check.

On a remanufactured or refurbished truck, ask whether the alternator and starter are new, rebuilt, repaired, or retained. Require the answer to be tied to the actual chassis, not a general statement about the model range.

Follow the wiring loom and connectors

Inspect accessible wiring routes from the batteries and cab to the engine, chassis, lamps, and body equipment. Look for unsupported looms, damaged insulation, exposed conductors, loose plugs, missing seals, poor splices, cable ties cutting into insulation, and wires rubbing against brackets, tyres, exhaust parts, or hydraulic equipment.

Pay close attention to modifications for a dump body, mixer, tanker, crane, or trailer. Body builders sometimes add lights, switches, cameras, or hydraulic controls after the base truck is assembled. These circuits need suitable fuses, protected routing, connectors that match the environment, and a clear separation from moving or hot parts. A tidy-looking wire should still be traced to its fuse and load where practical.

Ask for close photographs of repairs or additions. Tape wrapped around a joint may protect it temporarily, but it does not show whether the joint is mechanically secure or correctly fused.

Test lights, controls, instruments, and warnings

With the truck safely parked, test the functions that affect road use and daily operation. The inspector should check headlamps, position lamps, indicators, brake lamps, reversing lamp where fitted, hazard lamps, horn, wipers, washer, cab fan, gauges, and the dashboard warning display. Check the trailer electrical socket on a tractor unit or truck intended to tow equipment.

Where equipment is fitted, confirm that ABS, engine, battery, and other warning lamps behave according to the vehicle's normal start sequence. A warning lamp that does not illuminate at key-on may be as important as one that remains on. If a diagnostic scan is available, record the tool used, the date, and any fault codes found. Do not treat a clear dashboard alone as proof that every circuit is sound.

Include electrical checks in the pre-shipment inspection

Add these checks to the pre-shipment inspection:

  • Chassis number, engine model, voltage, battery specification, alternator, and starter references
  • Battery clamps, terminals, isolation switch, earth straps, and main cable routing
  • Starting behaviour and charging readings recorded under a stated test condition
  • Accessible wiring looms, connectors, fuses, relays, and body-equipment circuits
  • Headlamps, indicators, brake lamps, hazards, horn, wipers, instruments, and dashboard warnings
  • Trailer socket, body controls, and auxiliary equipment where fitted
  • Photographs, test notes, diagnostic record where available, and corrective work completed

Request the completed report before releasing the balance payment. Keep it with the signed technical attachment to the proforma invoice. A written record is more useful than an informal confirmation that the electrics were checked.

Plan service parts and documents before loading

Keep the electrical references with the chassis file: battery size, alternator, starter, main fuse locations, lamp types, connector details, and body-equipment documentation. Ask for the wiring diagram, owner manual, and service information that the supplier can provide for the actual configuration.

For a fleet or a remote route, a small package of agreed service items may be sensible. The spare-parts guide can help structure that discussion. Do not order costly electrical modules, sensors, or alternators solely from the truck badge. Confirm compatibility with the delivered engine, chassis, and electrical specification.

The practical buying decision

Approve the truck only after the electrical configuration, visible wiring condition, charging and starting checks, essential functions, and inspection record match the agreed vehicle. Require any correction to be documented against the assigned chassis before loading. This makes electrical inspection a defined buying checkpoint rather than a brief start-up video.
