How to Inspect Engine Mounts on a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Before Shipment

Engine mounts are easy to miss in yard photographs, but weak supports can cause vibration, hose strain, and expensive repairs. Here is what buyers should inspect before shipment.

An engine can start cleanly and still be poorly supported in the chassis. On a heavy truck, the engine mounts carry the engine and gearbox assembly while allowing controlled movement under torque, braking, and road vibration. A damaged mount, loose bracket, cracked crossmember, or improvised repair can create noise, vibration, hose damage, fan contact, and stress on the driveline.

For a new, remanufactured, or refurbished HOWO or SHACMAN truck, engine mounts should be included in the pre-shipment inspection. The aim is not to predict every future failure. It is to confirm the agreed engine and chassis, identify visible defects, check that the assembly sits correctly, and obtain evidence for the actual truck before the balance payment is released.

Identify the engine and chassis first

Start with the truck that will ship, not a similar truck in the yard. Ask for the chassis number, engine model, gearbox model, and a clear view of the engine bay and chassis rails. The engine mounting arrangement can differ with cab type, engine family, wheelbase, axle configuration, and body equipment.

The proforma invoice and technical attachment should identify the engine and gearbox installed on the assigned chassis. For a remanufactured or refurbished unit, ask the supplier to state whether the engine, gearbox, mounting brackets, and mounts are new, rebuilt, repaired, or retained. Locate every engine and gearbox support

Heavy trucks commonly use front, rear, and side supports, with the exact number and position depending on the design. Some mounts are easier to see from above, while others require inspection from the side or beneath the chassis. Do not rely on one wide engine-bay photograph. Request clear close photographs of each accessible mount, its bracket, its fasteners, and the surrounding frame or crossmember.

The inspection should cover the engine supports and the gearbox or transmission supports as one system. A good engine mount cannot correct a collapsed rear transmission mount. If the truck has a power takeoff, transfer case, or other drivetrain equipment, make sure its support arrangement and clearance are also considered.

Check rubber mounts and metal housings

Many mounts combine rubber with steel brackets or bonded housings. Look for split rubber, separation between rubber and metal, crushing, swelling from oil, missing bushings, corrosion, distorted housings, or a mount that sits at an obvious angle. Fresh paint can improve appearance but should not hide a cracked bracket or a welded repair on a support point.

Oil contamination matters. An engine-oil, fuel, coolant, or hydraulic leak can soften or damage some rubber components over time. If a mount is wet, the supplier should identify the source instead of wiping it clean for a photograph. Ask for repair evidence and a repeat inspection after any leaking component has been corrected.

A mount should not be judged only by colour or surface cleanliness. The relevant question is whether it supports the assembly at the intended height and keeps the engine aligned without excessive movement.

Inspect brackets, crossmembers, and fasteners

Follow each mount to the engine block, gearbox case, bracket, crossmember, and chassis rail. Check for cracked paint lines, distorted metal, elongated bolt holes, missing bolts, loose nuts, mismatched washers, spacers, or signs that a bracket has moved. A bracket held by a few new bolts after a repair may look tidy, but the inspection record should show what was repaired and why.

Ask the workshop to confirm that the fasteners were checked and tightened according to the applicable service procedure. Do not demand a torque value if the supplier cannot support it, but do require a written statement that the mounting hardware was inspected on the actual chassis. Safety-critical mounting repairs should be explained before approval.

Pay attention to clearance around the fan, radiator shroud, air-intake pipes, exhaust parts, wiring looms, coolant hoses, and cab-tilt equipment. If the engine is sitting too low or shifted sideways, these parts can rub or stretch when the truck moves.

Observe movement during a controlled test

A static photograph is useful, but a short controlled test can reveal excessive movement. With the truck parked on firm ground and operated by a qualified driver, request a video of a normal start, idle, gentle clutch engagement or transmission selection, slow pull-away, and smooth stop. The video should show the engine area only from a safe position. Nobody should place hands, tools, or cameras near belts, fans, rotating shafts, or moving linkage.

Watch for a harsh knock, unusual engine roll, a visible jump of the engine assembly, fan contact, or a hose that pulls tight. Some controlled movement is normal because the mounts are designed to absorb torque. The supplier should investigate clear impact, repeated vibration, or contact before shipment rather than calling it normal.

A road test can add useful evidence when it is safe and lawful. It should include low-speed acceleration, normal gear changes, deceleration, and a check for vibration through the cab. Avoid high-speed demonstrations or overloaded testing.

Separate engine-mount faults from other vibration sources

Not every vibration points to an engine mount. Uneven tyres, wheel balance, clutch condition, driveshaft joints, gearbox supports, axle components, and poor engine tuning can also create noise or movement. The inspection should record what was observed without guessing at a diagnosis from one video.

If vibration is reported, ask for a written explanation of the checks completed and any parts replaced. Include the engine-mount review with the driveline and differential inspection, clutch selection guide, and electrical-system inspection. These systems meet around the engine and gearbox, so a complete pre-shipment file is more useful than separate informal assurances.

Record replacement parts and future service details

If a mount or bracket was replaced during preparation, request the part reference, quantity, repair date, and photographs before and after the work. For remanufactured and refurbished trucks, this record helps the buyer understand what was renewed and gives local mechanics a better starting point later.

Ask which engine-mount references are suitable for the delivered engine and chassis. Do not order spare mounts solely from the truck badge, because engine family and chassis arrangement can affect compatibility. A small, confirmed spare-parts package may be useful for remote operations, but it should be based on the vehicle specification and local service support.

Add engine supports to the pre-shipment file

Include the following items in the wider pre-shipment inspection:

  • Chassis number, engine model, gearbox model, and date of inspection
  • Clear photographs of accessible engine and gearbox mounts, brackets, and crossmembers
  • Notes on rubber condition, oil contamination, corrosion, fasteners, and clearances
  • Video of a safe start, idle, controlled pull-away, and normal stop
  • Details of repairs, replacement parts, and follow-up checks completed before loading
  • Any vibration or noise observed, with the supplier's written diagnosis and corrective action

Approve the truck only when the mounts, brackets, clearances, and recorded test evidence match the agreed vehicle. A proper engine-support check takes little time before shipment, but it can prevent a vague vibration complaint from becoming an expensive cross-border repair.
