How to Specify a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Cooling System for Hot Climates
A clean radiator does not prove that a truck will control temperature under load. Here is how to specify and inspect the complete cooling system before shipment.
The cooling system on a heavy truck has to control engine temperature while the truck is loaded, climbing, moving slowly, or working in hot and dusty conditions. A clean radiator in a sales photograph does not prove that the complete system is suitable. The engine model, radiator, charge air cooler, fan, shroud, water pump, thermostat, hoses, coolant, and operating duty all need to work together.
This is especially important when buying a remanufactured or refurbished HOWO or SHACMAN truck. Some cooling parts may be new, while others have been cleaned, tested, repaired, or retained. The buyer should know which parts are fitted and how the complete system was checked before shipment.
Describe the route and working conditions first
Start with the truck's actual job. State whether it will work as a tractor, dump truck, mixer, tanker, cargo truck, or another configuration. Give the expected operating weight, road surface, gradients, average trip length, traffic conditions, and typical daily hours.
Ambient temperature is only one part of the duty. A long climb at low road speed can reduce airflow while the engine is producing high heat. A dump truck on a dusty site may collect debris between cooling cores. Frequent stopping, extended idling, and slow manoeuvring can also make the cooling package work harder than steady highway travel.
Tell the supplier about these conditions before asking for a truck recommendation. A specification prepared for moderate highway use may not suit a heavily loaded truck serving a mine, quarry, construction site, or mountain route.
Identify the exact engine and truck configuration
HOWO and SHACMAN are truck brands, not single engine specifications. Trucks under the same model name can have different engines, power ratings, emission systems, gearboxes, axle ratios, and export configurations. Cooling components must match the exact engine and chassis.
Ask for the engine model, engine number, rated power, gearbox model, axle ratio, and chassis number where the truck has already been assigned. Confirm whether the truck is new, remanufactured, or refurbished, and ask which cooling parts are new, rebuilt, tested, or retained.

Ask for the complete cooling package
Do not treat the radiator as the whole cooling system. Ask the supplier to identify the main parts and their condition. The list should cover:
- Radiator and pressure cap
- Charge air cooler and connecting pipes
- Cooling fan, drive arrangement, and shroud
- Water pump, thermostat, and coolant temperature sensors
- Expansion tank or header tank
- Upper and lower radiator hoses, clamps, and smaller coolant lines
- Coolant type and concentration used for testing and delivery
Check the radiator in a rebuilt truck
A radiator can look freshly painted while its fins, tubes, seals, or internal passages remain in poor condition. For a remanufactured or refurbished truck, ask whether the radiator was replaced, recored, cleaned, pressure tested, repaired, or retained. Request the test result where available and make the agreed condition part of the technical specification.
External inspection should look for crushed fins, corrosion, repair marks, loose mounts, damaged rubber supports, and debris between the radiator and charge air cooler. Internal condition also matters. Rust, scale, oil, or mixed coolant residue can point to earlier maintenance problems, although the cause should be diagnosed rather than guessed from colour alone.
Leaks should be checked with the system cold and again after it reaches normal operating temperature under controlled test conditions. The cap, tanks, hose joints, drain points, water pump area, and cabin heater lines should all be included.
Confirm fan, shroud, and airflow condition
The fan must pull or push air through the cooling cores as designed. A missing or damaged shroud lets air bypass the radiator. Incorrect fan orientation, damaged blades, weak drive components, loose belts, or poor core sealing can also reduce cooling performance.
Ask the inspector to confirm the fan condition, clearance, shroud fit, belt condition and tension where applicable, and any fan clutch or control system fitted to the engine. The test should also check for unusual vibration or contact between rotating parts and the shroud.
Use suitable coolant and plan for local water quality
Coolant controls freezing and boiling protection, corrosion, scale, and lubrication within the cooling system. The supplier should state what coolant was used, whether it was premixed or diluted, and what specification the engine requires. The destination workshop needs the same information for later service.
Poor water quality can create scale and corrosion when coolant is mixed locally. If suitable premixed coolant is difficult to obtain in the destination market, agree on a practical service plan before shipment. Do not assume that any green or red liquid is compatible. Coolant colour alone does not identify its chemistry or suitability.
Match cooling performance to the driveline and load
Overheating is not always caused by the radiator. Overloading, an unsuitable axle ratio, poor gear selection, dragging brakes, restricted intake airflow, engine faults, or a damaged exhaust system can increase heat or make the engine work outside its intended range.

Put cooling checks in the pre-shipment inspection
The pre-shipment inspection should identify the engine and chassis numbers, then record the cooling components and test performed. Useful checks include:
- Cold coolant level and visible coolant condition
- Radiator, charge air cooler, hoses, clamps, tanks, and mounts
- Fan, shroud, belts, drive components, and clearance
- Water pump area, thermostat housing, and hose joints for leaks
- Temperature gauge, warning lamp, and diagnostic fault check where available
- Warm test and road test observations with photographs or video
Record parts and service information before shipping
Add the engine model, radiator reference, hose references, belt size, thermostat, water pump, pressure cap, sensors, coolant specification, and fan control details to the vehicle file. For a fleet or remote worksite, ask whether compatible belts, hoses, clamps, a thermostat, and other sensible cooling spares should travel with the trucks.
