Concrete Mixer Truck Buying Guide: 8m3 vs 10m3

Buying a concrete mixer truck is not like buying a tractor unit. The drum, the chassis, and the pour rate all have to match the pace of your job site, and getting the size wrong costs you money on every load. This guide walks through the choices that matter when you import a HOWO mixer truck from China, with a focus on the two most common sizes we ship: 8 cubic meters and 10 cubic meters.

What the drum size actually means

The number quoted for a mixer, 8m3 or 10m3, is the geometric drum volume, not the amount of concrete you can safely carry. Real mixing capacity is usually 60 to 65 percent of the geometric volume because the drum needs headroom for the concrete to fold and turn without spilling. So an 8m3 drum carries roughly 5 to 5.5m3 of usable mix, and a 10m3 drum carries roughly 6 to 6.5m3.

Always ask a supplier to state both numbers. If a quote only gives you the drum size and calls it capacity, you do not yet know how much concrete arrives at the pour.

8m3 versus 10m3: the real tradeoff

The choice comes down to your roads and your batch plant, not just the size of your pours.

• 8m3 (6x4 chassis): Lighter, easier to turn on tight urban streets, and more forgiving on weak or unpaved roads. Lower fuel burn per trip. A strong default for city work, residential builds, and any market with axle load limits that are strictly enforced.
• 10m3 (8x4 chassis): Fewer trips for the same volume, which matters on large slabs and long hauls to a distant site. Needs better roads and a batch plant that can fill it quickly, or the extra capacity just sits idle.

A simple rule: if your trucks spend more time in traffic than on the highway, the 8m3 usually wins on total cost. If you are feeding big continuous pours from a fixed plant, the 10m3 pays for itself.

Chassis, engine, and the parts that wear

A mixer works the driveline harder than a normal truck because the drum turns constantly, even when parked. Focus on:

• Engine power: 371 horsepower is the common, reliable choice for both sizes. It has the torque to keep the drum turning on grades without straining.
• Hydraulic pump and reducer: These drive the drum and are the parts most likely to need service. Ask what brand is fitted and whether spares are stocked.
• Water tank and delivery chute: Confirm the tank size for washdown and that the chute reach suits how you actually pour.

New, remanufactured, or refurbished

We are a factory-direct supplier and most of what we ship is remanufactured or refurbished, with new units available on request. For a mixer, the drum and driveline matter more than cosmetics. A properly remanufactured unit has the hydraulics rebuilt or replaced and the drum inspected for wear, and it lands at a fraction of new-unit cost. Ask for photos of the drum interior and the reducer, not just the exterior.

Shipping a mixer truck from China

A mixer is tall and self-propelled, so it usually ships by RoRo rather than in a container. We load from Qingdao by default, with Shanghai and Shenzhen available. Standard terms are FOB, and CFR to your port is available on request. Lead time is about 30 days, minimum order is one unit, and payment is normally 30 percent deposit with the 70 percent balance against a copy of the bill of lading, by T/T or L/C.

Because the drum overhangs, confirm the shipped height and total length early. Some destination ports and inland routes have height limits that affect how the truck moves after it lands.

Documents and certificates

Every shipment includes the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin or Form E where a trade agreement applies. For markets that require pre-shipment conformity, we arrange COC, PVoC (common for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda), or SONCAP (Nigeria) so the truck clears without a hold.
