How to Avoid Demurrage and Detention Charges When Importing a Truck From China

Two fees, two different clocks

Demurrage and detention sound like one problem but they are two separate charges with two separate clocks, and mixing them up is how first-time truck importers end up paying for something they thought they had covered.

Demurrage is charged by the shipping line or terminal for the time a container, or in some ports a RoRo unit, sits inside the port after its free days run out, whether it has been unloaded or not. Detention is charged for the time you keep the shipping line's equipment, such as a container, outside the port past the free period before you return it.

In plain terms: demurrage is about the cargo sitting at the port. Detention is about equipment sitting at your place. Both are billed per day, and both can add up faster than the freight cost itself.

Why these charges catch buyers off guard

Most freight quotes include a small number of free days, often 5 to 7 calendar days total, split or combined between demurrage and detention depending on the carrier and port. If your customs clearance, inland trucking, or registration paperwork takes longer than that, charges start automatically. Nobody calls to warn you first.

Common reasons truck importers get hit:

• Customs documents are incomplete or incorrect, so clearance stalls for days.
• The buyer has not arranged a driver, low-loader, or inland transport in advance for a RoRo unit, so it sits at the terminal.
• Registration or roadworthiness paperwork at destination is not ready, so the truck cannot legally be driven off the port.
• Payment to release the bill of lading is delayed on the buyer's side.
• Port congestion delays vessel unloading, which eats into free time before the buyer does anything wrong.

How to plan around it before the vessel even sails

1. Get your paperwork ready before the vessel leaves China. Commercial invoice, bill of lading, and certificate of origin should be reviewed and correct while the ship is still at sea, not after it arrives.
2. Book customs clearance and, for RoRo units, a driver or transport in advance. A customs broker who already has your chassis and engine numbers can file the moment the ship is confirmed to arrive.
3. Know your free time before you book the shipment. Ask your freight forwarder for the exact free days at destination, since these vary by port and by carrier, and by RoRo versus container.
4. Sort registration requirements early. If your truck needs local homologation, plates, or a roadworthiness check before it can leave the port, start that process before the vessel arrives, not after.
5. Settle payment terms early so the bill of lading is not the bottleneck.
6. Consider extra free days as a line item. Some forwarders sell additional free days for a flat fee, which can be cheaper than daily demurrage if you know clearance will run long.

What it actually costs if you miss it

Demurrage and detention rates vary by port and carrier, but daily fees commonly range from roughly 50 to over 200 USD once free time expires, and rates often step up the longer the cargo sits. A one week delay on a single truck can add hundreds to over a thousand dollars in charges that have nothing to do with the truck itself.

The simplest rule

Free time is not a grace period you are meant to use. It is a buffer for normal delays. The importers who never pay these fees are the ones who treat documentation, transport, and registration as tasks to finish before the ship arrives, not after.
