How to Inspect the Steering System on a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Before Shipment
Steering faults can be difficult to see in sales photographs. Use this pre-shipment guide to check the steering system, record evidence, and address issues before export.
A truck can look clean, start normally, and still have steering faults that make it tiring or unsafe to operate. Excessive free play, leaking hoses, worn joints, a loose steering box, incorrect wheel alignment, or a damaged power-steering pump may not be obvious in sales photographs. They are far easier to identify before the balance payment is released and the truck is loaded for export.
For a new, remanufactured, or refurbished HOWO or SHACMAN truck, the steering inspection should confirm the actual chassis, record the steering layout, and identify visible defects or repairs. It cannot replace a destination-country roadworthiness test or a qualified local mechanic. It gives the buyer practical evidence that the truck delivered is the truck inspected.
Identify the actual chassis and steering arrangement
Start with the truck that will ship, not a similar unit in the supplier yard. Record the chassis number, model, axle configuration, drive side, tyre specification, and date of inspection. Ask the supplier which steering system is installed and whether any steering parts were renewed, rebuilt, repaired, or retained during preparation. A remanufactured or refurbished truck may have a different parts history from a new truck even when the cab and chassis look alike.
Inspect the steering wheel, column, and dashboard area
With the truck parked, engine off, and wheels straight ahead, inspect the steering wheel, column shrouds, adjustment lock where fitted, universal joints, and visible mounting brackets. The wheel should be secure and the column should not move in its mounts. Look for cracked trim, missing fasteners, damaged wiring, or signs that the column has been repaired after an impact.
Turn the steering wheel slowly through its free movement and ask the inspector to record how much it turns before the road wheels begin to respond. Some free play may be normal, but a wide dead band, clunk, or uneven resistance needs an explanation. Do not accept a claim that the steering is normal without a video showing the wheel and front tyres together.
Switch on the ignition and check the dashboard for steering or general fault warnings. A warning lamp alone does not identify the cause, but a persistent warning should be investigated and documented before shipment. Check the steering box, pump, reservoir, and hoses
Locate the steering box, power-steering pump, fluid reservoir, hoses, and visible return lines. Inspect for wetness, drips, cracked hoses, crushed sections, loose clamps, hose rubbing, or improvised fittings. Wiping a leak clean for a photograph is not a repair. Ask the supplier to identify the fluid source, correct it, and provide repeat evidence after the system is cleaned and operated.
Check the steering-box mounting bolts and the surrounding chassis rail or bracket. Look for damaged paint, distorted metal, missing fasteners, weld repairs, or elongated holes. A steering box carries high loads, so visible bracket damage needs a clear written explanation. For rebuilt trucks, request a record of any replacement steering components and their part references where available.
The fluid reservoir should have the correct cap and level marking where fitted. Record any evidence of leaks, foaming, low level, or contaminated hardware.
Inspect the linkage from the box to the wheels
Follow the steering linkage from the box to the steering arm, drag link, tie-rod, knuckle arms, and front axle. Ask for close photographs of each accessible ball joint, nut, clamp, and protective boot. Torn boots, loose clamps, leaking grease, cracked housings, damaged threads, or missing split pins can allow dirt into a joint or indicate incomplete assembly.
The truck should be on level ground with the parking brake applied for this check. A qualified person can move the steering wheel gently while an inspector watches the linkage from a safe position. Nobody should place hands near a moving joint, tyre, or steering arm. The aim is to see whether the wheel movement reaches the linkage smoothly, not to conduct a workshop repair in the yard.
Pay attention to clearance. Drag links and tie-rods must not touch suspension parts, tyres, brake hoses, chassis equipment, or body mounts through their normal travel. On a truck with a wide tyre, changed wheel offset, or modified suspension, clearance should be checked at both steering locks. Check front-axle, tyre, and alignment clues
Steering faults can be confused with front-axle or tyre problems. Inspect tyre condition, inflation evidence, uneven shoulder wear, tread damage, wheel-rim condition, and visible front-suspension components. Irregular tyre wear can point to alignment, axle, bearing, suspension, or steering issues, but it does not prove one cause on its own.
Ask the supplier to confirm the front wheels were aligned after any steering, axle, suspension, or tyre work. A printout may be useful where the workshop has suitable equipment, but the buyer should not assume every export yard can provide one. At minimum, request a written statement of the alignment check and a slow test drive that shows the truck tracks straight on a safe, level surface.

Request a controlled functional test
A static inspection is only the first step. With a qualified driver and a safe open area, request a short video of the engine starting, the steering moving smoothly from lock to lock while parked, a slow pull-away, gentle turns in both directions, and a controlled stop. The video should be taken from a safe distance and should not encourage high-speed driving, sharp turns, or hands near moving parts.
Listen for repeated knocks, pump whine, heavy steering, jerks, a wheel that does not return normally, or obvious wandering. Power steering can feel different at idle and at normal engine speed, so record the conditions without claiming a diagnosis from one clip. If an issue is found, ask for the supplier's written diagnosis, repair evidence, and a repeat test before approval.
The test should also confirm that the front tyres do not rub at full lock. If the truck has a body, bumper, mudguards, or auxiliary equipment, inspect those clearances too. A modification that clears while stationary may touch under suspension movement, so the evidence should show the actual truck configuration.
Put the steering evidence in the pre-shipment file
Keep the steering record with the wider pre-shipment inspection. It should include:
- Chassis number, truck model, drive side, axle configuration, and inspection date
- Photographs of the steering wheel, column, steering box, pump, reservoir, hoses, linkage, and front tyres
- Notes on free play, leaks, bracket condition, joint boots, fasteners, and visible repairs
- A controlled video of stationary steering and a slow functional test
- Alignment check evidence, tyre condition, and confirmation of clearance at full lock
- Details of replacement parts, corrective work, and repeat inspection after repairs
Approve the truck only when the steering response, linkage condition, fluid system, clearances, and repair record match the agreed vehicle. A detailed steering inspection is small compared with the cost of correcting a safety-critical fault after a cross-border shipment.
