How to Inspect a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Cab Tilt System Before Shipment
Cab tilt equipment gives workshop access to the engine, but a small fault can delay service. Check the complete system before an export truck is loaded.
A cab tilt fault can turn a routine service job into a roadside delay. On many HOWO and SHACMAN models, lifting the cab gives access to the engine, gearbox area, cooling components, and electrical connections. The system carries the weight of the cab and must lock safely once raised. Check it before shipment, especially when the truck will work far from a dealer or parts warehouse.
Confirm the exact cab and chassis
Ask the supplier to confirm the cab series, chassis number, and tilt arrangement fitted to the truck being inspected. Cab hinges, pumps, cylinders, hoses, locks, and operating handles can differ between configurations. A photograph of another truck is not sufficient. The inspection record should identify the vehicle and show its chassis number where possible.
If the truck is new, verify that any transport restraints have been removed before the test. If it is remanufactured or refurbished, ask whether the tilt system was rebuilt, repaired, or retained from the donor vehicle. That answer helps you decide which seals, hoses, or other parts to include with the order.
Inspect hinges and pivot points
Begin with the cab down and secured. Look at both hinge points for cracks, distorted brackets, missing fasteners, fresh weld marks, or paint that hides a repair. Minor surface dust is normal. Wet oil around a hinge, oval mounting holes, or unequal cab gaps need closer attention.
The left and right sides should look consistent. A worn hinge can let the cab move unevenly as it lifts, putting extra load on the cylinder and lock. Ask for close photos of each hinge and a short video that begins with the cab fully lowered.
Check the pump, handle, and release control
Many truck cab tilt systems use a manual hydraulic pump. Inspect the pump body, handle pivot, hose connections, and release valve. The handle should fit properly and move through its stroke without bending, slipping, or striking nearby components.
The release control matters as much as the lifting action. The operator must be able to lower the cab in a controlled way after servicing. Ask the inspector to identify the control before operating it. An unclear lowering method is a practical warning sign, not a detail to ignore.
Look for hydraulic leaks before the test
Check the cylinder body, rod, hose ends, pump fittings, and the ground below the truck. A dry, clean system is the best starting point. A light film left after assembly is not automatically a leak, but fresh fluid forming at a fitting, a wet cylinder rod, or droplets on the chassis should be recorded and corrected before loading.
Hydraulic oil collects dirt, so a dirty wet patch is often easier to spot than a clean drip. Do not accept a quick wipe as proof of repair. Request a second functional test after the area has been cleaned and photographed.
Watch a complete lifting cycle
The inspection video should show the cab lifting from fully closed to the service position. The movement should be steady on both sides. Listen for abnormal knocking or repeated metallic contact. The cab should not jump, twist sharply, or stop because an operator has to force it by hand.
At the raised position, confirm that the mechanical safety lock or support is engaged according to the truck design. Hydraulic pressure alone is not a safe service support. The video should show the lock, not merely a cab viewed from a distance.
Check hose and wiring clearance
As the cab rises, hoses and wiring looms move with it. Watch for rubbing, tight bends, loose clips, or a loom pulling against a sharp edge. Pay attention to air lines, electrical connectors, and flexible conduit between the cab and chassis.
Small routing errors can become failures after thousands of tilt cycles. If a line is close to a hinge or cylinder, ask for a clear photo with the cab raised. The supplier can often correct a clip position before shipment, while access and replacement parts are easy to arrange.
Inspect the safety lock and lowered-cab latch
With the cab raised, inspect the safety lock for full engagement, intact hardware, and a clear contact surface. Then observe the lowering cycle. The cab should descend smoothly and settle fully onto its mounts. After it is lowered, verify that the normal latch is engaged and that the cab does not remain partly raised.
An incomplete latch can cause rattles, water entry, or unsafe movement. Ask the operator to make a final visual check from both sides rather than assuming the cab is locked because the pump has been released.
Include the tilt system in the handover record
Before payment or shipment, request these items in the inspection package:
- A video of one full lift and lowering cycle
- Close photos of both hinges, the pump, cylinder, hoses, and safety lock
- A note confirming the chassis number of the inspected truck
- Photos after any reported leak or routing correction
- The operating handle, if it is a removable item
- Part numbers for the pump, cylinder, hose kit, and seals when available
These records are useful if a part is missing on arrival or if a workshop needs to identify a replacement. They also make the inspection specific to the truck you are buying.
Plan basic service spares
For a truck going to a remote route or a fleet with limited parts support, ask whether a seal kit, hose kit, pump repair kit, or spare release valve can be supplied. Do not order parts only by a generic HOWO or SHACMAN name. Match them to the cab series and the actual hydraulic assembly.
