How to Inspect a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Fuel System Before Shipment
A truck can look ready to load while a small fuel-system fault is waiting to cause downtime. Here is what to inspect before shipment.
Start with the correct engine and fuel-system specification
Ask the supplier to identify the engine model and the fuel-system components fitted to the exact truck. A model name on a quotation is not enough. The inspection record should tie the engine number, chassis number, fuel-filter part numbers, and any water separator or lift-pump arrangement to the unit being shipped.
If the truck is remanufactured or refurbished, ask which fuel-system parts were replaced, cleaned, serviced, or retained. Do not assume that a painted tank, new hose clamp, or clean engine bay proves the condition of the pump or injectors. The answer should distinguish work performed from parts merely inspected.
Inspect the fuel tank outside and inside
Begin with the tank body, mounting straps, brackets, filler neck, cap, drain point, and sender connection. Look for dents near the lower edge, fresh sealant around a repair, corrosion at strap contact points, wetness below fittings, or an improvised support. A tank must be secure on the chassis and clear of moving parts, exhaust heat, and sharp edges.
Request photos of the tank before it is filled and after it has stood for a reasonable period. Fresh diesel staining under the tank, around the drain, or at the sender flange needs an explanation. The cap should seat properly, and the filler neck should not be damaged in a way that allows water or dirt to enter.
Where access is practical, ask for evidence that the tank is clean inside. Sediment, rust scale, water, or loose debris can block filters soon after delivery. A supplier may use a light, a clean sampling container, or a documented tank-cleaning step. The method matters less than receiving clear evidence for the exact truck.
Follow the fuel path from tank to engine
The inspection should follow the route rather than treating the fuel system as one item. Check the pickup point, flexible hoses, rigid lines, unions, clips, protective sleeves, and all points where a line passes near the frame, cab, engine, or bodywork.
Lines should not rub against a sharp bracket, hang unsupported, kink at a bend, or sit where a tyre or suspension component can touch them through its full movement. Look for damp connections, hardened rubber, cracked outer layers, mismatched hose sizes, and temporary-looking clamps. A clean line is not proof by itself, but wetness after an engine run is a useful warning sign.
Ask the inspector to take wide photos that show routing and close photos of connections. Close photos alone can hide a line that is incorrectly supported or routed across a wear point.
Check filters and the water separator
Fuel filters are service items, yet they can determine whether a newly delivered truck starts reliably. Confirm the primary and secondary filter arrangement fitted to the engine, the part numbers, and the date or mileage of the last service if it is known. A filter should be installed squarely, with clean sealing surfaces and no leak at the head or drain.
If a water separator is fitted, check that its bowl, sensor, drain, and electrical connection are intact. The buyer should understand how it is drained and whether replacement elements are available in the destination market. It is sensible to include compatible spare filter elements in the parts plan, but quantities should match the route, service interval, and local supply rather than being guessed.
Look closely at the pump and injector connections
The exact arrangement varies by engine, so the goal is not to diagnose a pump remotely. The goal is to identify visible leakage, loose fittings, damaged wiring, and signs that the engine runs unevenly. Inspect pump-area connections, high-pressure lines where accessible, return lines, injector connections, and any related sensors or wiring without loosening them.
Diesel mist, fresh wetness, a strong fuel smell after running, cracked return hoses, or a line that has been bent repeatedly should be recorded. Never ask someone to place hands near pressurized fuel lines while the engine is running. A visual inspection from a safe distance and a proper workshop test are different tasks.
For a remanufactured engine, request the test evidence that is actually available. This may include a cold start video, idle video, warm running video, or workshop record. It should not be presented as a substitute for a full injector-bench report unless that report was specifically ordered and supplied.
Run the truck and check for leaks afterward
A static inspection cannot show every fault. Have the engine started from cold where possible, then run it until the inspector can check for changes at idle and after a short controlled drive. Watch for abnormal warning lamps, hard starting, unstable idle, visible smoke that persists after warm-up, fuel odour, or leaks that appear only when the system is operating.
After the engine is stopped, recheck the tank fittings, filter heads, hoses, pump area, and ground below the truck. Ask for time-stamped photos or video before and after the run. If a leak is repaired, request fresh evidence after the repair rather than relying on an earlier photo of the fault.
Match fuel-system evidence to the shipping file
Keep fuel-system photos with the chassis-number verification images, purchase specification, pre-shipment report, and spare-parts list. A simple folder structure makes later discussions clearer if the truck arrives with a question about a filter, a line, or a fitting.
The shipping file should also state which fuel filters are fitted and which spare elements are included. That gives the receiving workshop a usable starting point without pretending that every fuel specification or service interval is identical in every market.
