How to Inspect HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Wheel Hubs Before Shipment

Wheel hubs carry load, retain lubricant, and support the braking system. Here is what to inspect and record before an export truck ships.

A wheel hub problem can stop a truck long before the engine or gearbox needs attention. The hub assembly carries the wheel, supports the bearings, retains lubricant, and connects braking and axle components at a point exposed to load, water, dust, and heat. A truck that rolls around a yard can still have a leaking seal, loose adjustment, damaged stud, or heat-related bearing problem that becomes serious on a loaded route.

For a new, remanufactured, or refurbished HOWO or SHACMAN truck, inspect each hub as part of the axle-specific pre-shipment check. The aim is not to diagnose every internal condition from photographs. It is to identify the exact axle arrangement, look for visible warning signs, and obtain evidence that the truck was checked and operated before the balance is released.

Identify the axle and wheel arrangement

Start by recording the chassis number, axle configuration, tyre size, wheel type, and axle locations. A 6x4, 8x4, and 6x6 truck may use different hub, brake, and bearing arrangements. Front and rear positions can also differ. Ask the supplier to identify the axle model or part reference when it is visible and to confirm whether the hub components are new, retained, repaired, or replaced on a remanufactured or refurbished unit.

Photographs should show the exact truck, not a generic axle on the workshop floor. Keep the chassis-number image, full-side view, and close hub photographs in the same inspection folder. Inspect wheel rims, nuts, and studs first

With the truck parked on level ground, examine each wheel rim, wheel nut, stud, and nut seat. Look for cracked or bent rims, missing nuts, damaged threads, uneven nut seating, fresh weld repairs, or rust lines spreading outward from a stud hole. A wheel that has been run loose can damage the rim and studs even after the nuts have been tightened again.

Ask for close photographs of each wheel position and a wider image that shows the axle. On dual wheels, inspect the spacer area and both sidewalls as far as practical. Confirm that tyre sizes and tread patterns match the agreed specification and that no tyre rubs against suspension, brake hoses, mudguards, or bodywork.

Check hub seals and lubricant evidence

The hub seal keeps lubricant inside and contamination outside. Inspect around the hub cap, seal area, wheel face, brake backing plate, and inside edge of the rim for fresh oil or grease. A dry dusty surface is different from a wet film that has collected dirt. If the hub uses an oil-filled cap, request a clear image of the lubricant level and condition where visible.

Grease or oil on brake components needs prompt investigation. Do not accept a cleaned hub as proof that the issue is resolved. The supplier should identify the source, complete the repair, and provide fresh photographs after an operating test. Excessive leakage can affect brake performance as well as bearing life.

Look for heat signs around the hub and brakes

Bearing and brake faults often leave evidence of heat. Look for discoloured paint, blue or darkened metal, melted grease, scorched wiring, cracked hub-cap material, or a sharp burnt smell after a road test. These signs do not prove one exact cause, but they should not be ignored.

Ask the inspector to compare hub temperatures across the same axle immediately after a controlled drive using a suitable temperature tool. The report should state the test conditions, such as route, load, ambient conditions, and whether the brakes were used repeatedly. A single temperature reading without a comparison or test context has limited value.

Check bearing play safely

A qualified technician can check for excessive wheel-end movement with the axle safely raised and supported. The wheel should never be checked under a truck held only by a jack. The technician should follow the applicable service procedure and report whether the adjustment and movement meet the axle manufacturer's requirement.

A remote buyer should ask for the result and the method, not try to judge bearing clearance from a short video. Visible rocking, grinding, rough rotation, or a wheel that does not turn freely needs investigation. If the hub is opened for repair, request photographs of the bearings, races, seals, and lubricant before reassembly, along with the part references used.

Inspect brake connections at each hub

The wheel end works beside the braking system. Check brake chambers, hoses, fittings, ABS sensor wiring where fitted, clips, slack adjusters, and dust shields for abrasion, loose mounting, leaks, or contact with rotating parts. Make sure flexible hoses have enough movement for steering and suspension travel without being stretched or trapped.

For drum brakes, ask for evidence that the drum, lining, and adjustment were inspected when the wheel was removed if the scope permits. For disc brakes, inspect the caliper, pads, disc surface, and retaining hardware. Include a controlled operating test

Request a video of the truck moving from rest, turning in both directions where safe, braking smoothly, and returning for a walk-around. The test does not need high speed. It should show that the wheels rotate without obvious wobble, abnormal noise, smoke, or visible lubricant loss.

After the drive, repeat the visual seal and heat check. If the truck has been rebuilt or a hub has been repaired, ask for the repair order and a repeat test after the work. What to place in the inspection record

Before shipment, ask for these wheel-hub records:

  • Chassis number, axle configuration, tyre size, and wheel positions inspected
  • Close photographs of rims, nuts, studs, hub caps, seals, and brake connections
  • A note on lubricant level or condition where the design allows it to be seen
  • Any temperature comparison taken after the controlled operating test
  • The technician's bearing-play result and the method used
  • Details of repairs, replaced parts, and the repeat test when work was needed
  • A final walk-around video showing the truck at rest after the test

These records make it easier to assess an exception before the truck enters the shipping process. They also give the receiving workshop a starting point if it needs parts support after arrival.

Plan practical wheel-end spares

For routes with limited service support, ask whether matched hub seals, wheel nuts, studs, bearings, sensor leads, and brake wear parts can be supplied with the truck. Do not order by a generic truck name alone. Match each part to the axle model, hub type, wheel position, and axle arrangement on the exact vehicle.
