HOWO vs SHACMAN: How the Two Brands Compare

HOWO and SHACMAN are both major Chinese truck brands, but they differ in engine options, cab design, and market focus. Here is how to choose between them.

Two brands, one strong reputation

HOWO and SHACMAN are the two names that come up most often when buyers start researching Chinese heavy trucks. Both build trucks that work hard in demanding markets across Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, and both have earned a reputation for being tough, repairable, and reasonably priced compared to European or Japanese alternatives. Choosing between them is less about picking a winner and more about matching the right brand to your route, your climate, and your budget.

Where each brand comes from

HOWO trucks are built by Sinotruk, one of China's oldest and largest heavy truck manufacturers, based in Jinan, Shandong. The HOWO name has been on the road for two decades and is one of the most recognized truck brands across export markets, largely because of how widely it has been used in mining, construction, and long haul fleets.

SHACMAN trucks come from Shaanxi Automobile Group, based in Xi'an. SHACMAN built its early reputation on rugged off road and heavy duty trucks, and its newer models, like the H3000 and F3000, use more modern cab platforms developed with European design input. Many buyers see SHACMAN as slightly more refined in cab comfort on its newest models, while still keeping the same reputation for durability.

Engine and drivetrain differences

Both brands offer a similar range of engine displacements and power outputs, and both use widely available diesel engine platforms that mechanics across most export markets already know how to service. The practical differences tend to show up in configuration:

  • HOWO offers a very wide model spread, from the long running 371 platform to newer NX and TX cabs, including a CNG tractor option for markets where gas is cheaper or emissions rules favor it.
  • SHACMAN's H3000 and F3000 platforms are built around newer cab designs and are a common choice for buyers who want a more modern feeling cab without stepping up to a European brand.

Neither brand has a clear across the board performance edge. The right choice usually comes down to which specific model and configuration fits your payload, terrain, and fuel type, not the badge on the grille.

Parts and service network

This is where local market conditions matter more than brand loyalty. Both HOWO and SHACMAN have shipped in very high volumes for years, which means genuine and aftermarket parts are widely available in most markets that import Chinese trucks regularly. Before you commit to either brand, check with local workshops and parts distributors in your specific country, since availability can vary more by region than by brand.

Price positioning

Pricing between the two brands is generally close for comparable configurations, and neither is reliably cheaper across the board. Differences tend to come from the specific model, engine size, cab trim, and axle configuration you choose rather than from the brand itself. How to decide

A few practical questions help narrow the choice:

  • Do you need a wide range of trim levels and a long track record in your market? HOWO's model range and history may be the more familiar choice.
  • Do you want a newer cab platform with more modern styling and comfort? SHACMAN's H3000 or F3000 lines are worth a close look.
  • Is gas availability a factor on your route? HOWO's NX CNG option is a specific advantage if diesel costs or emissions rules make CNG attractive.
  • What do local mechanics already know how to service? Whichever brand already has a presence in your market will usually be cheaper to maintain long term.

Neither brand is the universal right answer. The best approach is to compare specific models against your actual payload, route, and budget, rather than choosing a brand first and a model second.
