How to Inspect a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Chassis Frame Before Shipment
Fresh paint can hide frame damage or weak repairs. Use this inspection guide to check the actual truck chassis and document concerns before export.
A fresh coat of paint can make a truck chassis look uniform while hiding repairs, corrosion, distorted brackets, or damage around highly loaded mounting points. For a buyer importing a HOWO or SHACMAN truck, the frame deserves its own inspection before the balance payment is released and the truck is loaded for export.
This check applies to new, remanufactured, and refurbished trucks. Its purpose is to confirm the actual chassis, examine the rails and crossmembers, document repairs, and check the body or fifth-wheel mounting. It does not replace an assessment by a qualified engineer when serious damage is found.
Start with the identified chassis
Inspect the truck that will ship, not another unit of the same model. Record the chassis number, model, axle configuration, wheelbase, body type, inspection date, and current odometer reading where available. Ask whether the frame, crossmembers, brackets, or subframe were replaced, straightened, welded, reinforced, or retained. For a remanufactured or refurbished truck, distinguish new parts from repaired or reused parts. A broad statement that the chassis was refurbished does not describe the work.
Inspect clean metal under good lighting
Dirt, oil, thick underseal, and fresh paint can conceal the edges of cracks or repairs. Ask for the frame to be clean before inspection and use lighting along both sides of each rail. Wide photographs establish the truck layout, but close photographs are needed around brackets, holes, welds, and areas where the surface changes.
Inspect the outer face, inner face, top flange, and lower flange wherever access permits. Include areas behind the cab, around spring hangers, near engine brackets, above the rear bogie, around fifth-wheel or body mounts, and at the rear. Do not crawl beneath a truck unless it is secured by suitable workshop equipment.
Check rail alignment and signs of deformation
The two main rails should follow a consistent line without visible kinks, twists, local buckling, or abrupt changes in flange shape. Compare the left and right rails from matching viewpoints. A photograph along the rail can reveal a bend, although camera perspective can mislead. Use measurements when alignment is uncertain.
Look for ripples near holes, compressed flange edges, stretched paint, unusual gaps at crossmembers, or brackets that no longer sit square. Tyre clearance and cab or body alignment can provide supporting clues, but they do not prove the frame is straight. If deformation is suspected, request dimensional checks against suitable chassis reference points and an assessment by a competent repairer or engineer.
Frame alignment matters across truck types. A HOWO 6x4 square body dump truck can place repeated loads through the subframe and rear suspension, while a tractor carries concentrated fifth-wheel loads. The body type changes where inspectors should look, but it does not reduce the need to check both rails completely.
Examine cracks, holes, and repair welds
Pay close attention to changes in section, drilled holes, bracket ends, crossmember connections, spring hangers, engine and gearbox supports, fifth-wheel mounts, body pivots, and hydraulic-hoist areas. Cracks often begin at stress concentrations, so inspect the metal immediately beside weld toes, bolt holes, and sharp bracket corners.
Unexplained welding on a frame needs documentation. Some trucks have legitimate manufacturer or body-builder welds, while other welds may indicate a repair or later modification. Ask who carried out the work, why it was required, what procedure was followed, and how it was inspected. Do not accept fresh paint as evidence that a repair is sound.
Check for extra drilled or flame-cut holes, elongated bolt holes, rough edges, missing fasteners, and reinforcement plates that appear only on one side. Frame rails should not be modified casually because heat, hole position, fastener preload, and reinforcement shape can affect fatigue performance. Where the repair history is unclear or the work is near a highly loaded area, obtain a qualified structural opinion before accepting the truck.
Check crossmembers, brackets, and fasteners
Crossmembers keep the rails positioned and carry loads from the engine, gearbox, suspension, body, tanks, and coupling equipment. Inspect each accessible crossmember for cracks, distortion, corrosion, loose fasteners, damaged rivets, and separation from its brackets. Compare similar connections on both sides of the chassis.
Mounting bolts should be present and correctly seated. Loose nuts, missing washers where specified, mismatched fasteners, damaged threads, or movement marks require correction and a repeat check. Torque values depend on the specific chassis and fastener, so use the applicable service information.

Inspect suspension and body mounting points
Spring hangers, equalizer brackets, torque-rod brackets, shock mounts, and axle-related frame brackets transfer repeated road loads into the rails. Look for cracks, distorted holes, loose fasteners, uneven spacing, contact marks, and weld repairs. Compare left and right sides and check that hoses, wiring, and air lines are not trapped against sharp frame edges.
The body or coupling must spread its loads through suitable mounts. On a tipper, inspect the subframe, body pivots, and hoist mounts. On a tractor, inspect the fifth-wheel plate and its attachment to the rails. For other bodies, check the mounting layout against the body builder's drawing.

Look for corrosion and trapped moisture
Surface rust is different from deep scaling, pitting, section loss, or corrosion swelling between joined plates. Inspect the inside faces of rails, boxed sections where visible, areas beneath battery boxes and tanks, mud traps near brackets, and places where drain holes are blocked. Check whether underseal covers clean prepared metal or has simply been applied over loose scale.
Corrosion severity cannot be judged from colour alone. If section loss is suspected, request cleaning and suitable thickness measurements at the affected area and a sound comparison point. Severe corrosion near suspension, steering, fifth-wheel, hoist, or body mounts needs qualified assessment.
Build a frame inspection record
Keep the chassis-frame evidence with the wider pre-shipment inspection. The record should include:
- Chassis number, model, wheelbase, axle configuration, body type, and inspection date
- Wide photographs of the complete left and right rails, plus views from front and rear
- Close photographs of flanges, crossmembers, suspension brackets, engine supports, body or fifth-wheel mounts, and rear frame section
- Notes on alignment, cracks, corrosion, holes, reinforcement plates, welds, and visible fastener condition
- The stated history of structural repairs or modifications, with supporting records where available
- Measurements, corrective work, and repeat inspection evidence for every material concern
Photographs should show scale and location. A close image of a weld is far more useful when another image shows where that weld sits on the identified chassis. Keep original files where possible, since compressed messaging images may remove useful detail.
Make the approval decision from evidence
A sound frame inspection follows the load path from the body or fifth wheel through the subframe, brackets, crossmembers, rails, and suspension mounts. It checks straightness, cracking, corrosion, modifications, and repair history on the actual truck. If a concern cannot be explained or measured, hold approval until a qualified person assesses it and the supplier provides corrective evidence.
