How to Inspect a HOWO or SHACMAN Dump Truck Hydraulic Tipping System Before Shipment

A dump truck can drive correctly while its tipping system still hides expensive faults. Use this guide to inspect the hydraulic hoist before shipment.

A dump truck can start, steer, and drive correctly while its tipping system still has faults that delay work after arrival. Leaking hoses, worn pivots, a weak pump, poor cylinder mounting, contaminated oil, or an incorrectly matched power takeoff can turn the body into the most expensive part of the inspection.

The check should cover the actual truck before balance payment and loading. It applies to new, remanufactured, and refurbished HOWO and SHACMAN dump trucks, although the expected repair history differs by condition grade. Hydraulic systems store energy and raised bodies can fall. Only trained personnel should operate or inspect the system, using the body safety prop and workshop procedures specified for the truck.

Identify the truck and tipping system

Record the chassis number, model, axle configuration, body dimensions, stated payload, inspection date, and odometer reading where available. Ask the supplier to identify the hydraulic cylinder type, pump, power takeoff, oil tank, control valve, operating controls, and body builder. State whether each major part is new, rebuilt, repaired, or retained. A general claim that the hydraulic system was serviced does not show which seals, hoses, bearings, or controls were changed.

Inspect the body and subframe before raising it

Start with the body fully lowered on firm, level ground. Check the floor, side walls, front bulkhead, tailgate, hinge points, subframe, crossmembers, body stops, and mounting brackets. Look for cracks, distortion, corrosion, loose fasteners, uneven gaps, fresh repairs, and areas where the body or subframe has contacted the chassis.

Inspect the rear pivots and hinge pins closely. Pins, bushes, retainers, and brackets should be complete, aligned, and free from obvious cracking or excessive movement. Grease points should be accessible. A worn rear pivot can let the body shift as it rises and can load the cylinder or subframe unevenly.

Check the hydraulic cylinder and its mountings

Examine the full visible cylinder body, stages, rod surfaces, seals, trunnions, pins, brackets, and retaining hardware. Look for oil wetness, scoring, dents, corrosion, damaged threads, loose retainers, cracked mounts, and signs that the cylinder has rubbed against another part. Fresh paint around a bracket should not prevent a closer check of the underlying metal and welds.

For a telescopic front cylinder, check that the stages extend in a controlled sequence and remain aligned. For an underbody or other hoist arrangement, inspect every linkage and pivot included in the mechanism. The approved hoist drawing and service information should control acceptable clearances, mounting positions, and fastener settings. Do not estimate these values from another truck that only looks similar.

Inspect the oil tank, pump, PTO, and valves

Check the hydraulic oil tank for damage, insecure mounting, leaks, a readable level indication, a secure filler cap, and clean breather arrangements. Ask which hydraulic oil is installed and compare it with the equipment specification and expected climate. Milky, foamy, burnt, or visibly contaminated oil needs investigation rather than a simple top-up.

Inspect the pump and its mountings for leaks, cracks, loose fasteners, unusual noise, and damaged drive connections. The power takeoff must match the gearbox, pump rotation, speed, and torque demand. Review the PTO selection guide when confirming the installed components against the order.

Operate the engagement and body controls only according to the truck procedure. Confirm that labels and control directions are clear, the neutral and hold functions behave as intended, and the lowering control can be used smoothly. Check any warning lamp, buzzer, body-up indicator, interlock, or limit device fitted to the truck. A safety device should be tested as designed, not bypassed to finish the inspection.

Trace every hose and fitting

Follow pressure and return lines from the tank through the pump, valves, and cylinder. Hoses should not be twisted, kinked, crushed, stretched, or routed against sharp edges, hot exhaust parts, tyres, or moving suspension components. Check clamps, protective sleeves, unions, elbows, and flexible sections at points where the body moves.

Look for wet fittings, cracked outer covers, exposed reinforcement, blistering, abrasion, and improvised repairs. Wiping a hose clean before photographs does not establish that it is leak-free. Repeat the inspection after a complete tipping cycle and hold period. Never search for a pressurised pinhole leak with a hand because injected hydraulic fluid can cause severe injury.

Run a controlled no-load tipping test

Use a clear, level test area with no overhead obstruction or people beside or behind the body. Confirm that tyres are properly supported, the truck is secured as required, and the tailgate arrangement is suitable for the test. Begin with a no-load cycle unless the manufacturer or qualified inspector specifies another safe procedure.

Raise the body while observing the cylinder, subframe, rear pivots, hoses, pump sound, and body alignment. Movement should be controlled, without severe jerking, binding, hose pulling, metal contact, or visible twisting. Pause only where the system procedure permits. Check whether the body holds position as specified, then lower it smoothly and confirm that it seats correctly on its supports.

Record the operating time only if the supplier has provided the correct test condition and reference specification. A faster lift is not automatically better. Pump speed, oil temperature, body weight, engine speed, and system design affect the result, so compare like with like.

Check the tailgate and body-up condition

Open and close the tailgate through its complete intended movement. Inspect hinges, locking hooks, chains, pins, latches, seals where fitted, and any pneumatic or hydraulic actuator. Confirm that both sides release and lock evenly. A tailgate that binds under no load may behave worse when the body carries material.

With the body raised only under the approved safe procedure, inspect clearance around the cab guard, chassis equipment, mudguards, hydraulic lines, and rear frame. Keep a reviewable inspection record

Add the tipping system evidence to the wider pre-shipment inspection. The record should include:

  • Chassis number, body dimensions, stated payload, cylinder type, pump, PTO, oil specification, and inspection date
  • Wide photographs of the lowered and raised body, plus close views of cylinder mounts, pivots, subframe, tank, pump, hoses, valves, and controls
  • A video of one complete raise, hold, lower, and tailgate cycle performed under safe conditions
  • Notes on leaks, noise, alignment, hose movement, warning devices, and body seating
  • The stated repair history and part condition, with invoices or work records where available
  • Corrective work and a repeat test for every material concern

Approve the truck from the full test

A sound tipping-system inspection checks the load path from the body through the pivots, hoist, subframe, and chassis, then tests the hydraulic power and controls under a defined procedure. It also confirms the system installed on the identified truck matches the written order. Hold approval when leaks, damaged hoses, cracked mounts, unstable movement, unclear repairs, or missing safety devices remain unresolved.
