How to Inspect a HOWO or SHACMAN Truck Suspension Before Shipment
Suspension wear can become tyre damage, poor handling, and downtime after export. Use this guide to inspect the actual truck before approval.
Why suspension needs its own inspection
The suspension carries the truck and transfers road loads into the chassis. A HOWO or SHACMAN can be a poor purchase if its springs, air bags, brackets, bushes, or axle locating parts are worn, damaged, or incorrectly assembled. These problems affect tyre wear, handling, ride, body stability, and component life.
Inspect the truck before balance payment and loading. The check applies to new, remanufactured, and refurbished vehicles, although the expected evidence differs by condition grade. It is not a substitute for a qualified assessment where cracks, severe wear, misalignment, or unsafe handling are found.
Identify the suspension specification first
Start with the truck that will ship. Record its chassis number, model, axle configuration, wheelbase, body type, suspension type, tyre size, odometer reading where available, and inspection date. Ask the supplier to state whether the truck has mechanical leaf springs, air suspension, or a mixed arrangement. Record the number of leaves or air bags per axle, stated axle ratings, stabilizer equipment, shock absorbers if fitted, and the condition grade. For a remanufactured or refurbished truck, request a clear list of parts that are new, rebuilt, repaired, or retained. A general statement that the suspension was serviced does not identify what was done.
Check the truck on level ground
Park the truck on firm, level ground before judging ride height or lean. Compare the left and right sides from the front, rear, and side. A vehicle that sits noticeably lower on one corner may have a broken spring, weak air bag, seized linkage, incorrect ride-height setting, shifted load, or another issue that needs diagnosis. Record photographs of the whole axle group and close views of each connection. Measure ride height only against the approved specification for that chassis, axle, tyre, and suspension.
Inspect leaf springs, U-bolts, and hangers
Mechanical leaf springs are common on heavy-duty dump trucks and severe-service chassis. Inspect every leaf pack for broken leaves, separation, corrosion between leaves, displaced clips, damaged centre bolts, and contact marks that suggest movement. Look closely at the ends of leaves and around the centre clamp, where damage may be easier to miss under dirt or paint.
Check spring seats, U-bolts, nuts, washers, and axle pads. U-bolts must be present, correctly seated, and free from obvious thread damage or movement marks. Do not guess torque from appearance. The applicable service information and fastener specification control the final value. Loose or unevenly tightened U-bolts can allow the axle to shift and can damage the spring, seat, driveline, tyres, and brake connections.
Inspect front and rear spring hangers, equalizer brackets, pins, bushes, and their mounting areas on the frame. Look for oval holes, cracked brackets, missing retainers, dry or displaced bushes, and weld repairs. Compare matching parts on both sides. Inspect air bags, height control, and air lines
For air suspension, begin with the air bags. Check rubber bellows for cuts, abrasion, bulges, trapped debris, oil contamination, loose beads, and signs of rubbing against brackets, tyres, or other parts. The bag must inflate and deflate without folding abnormally. A clean exterior does not prove that it holds pressure.
Inspect height-control valves, linkages, mounting brackets, air lines, fittings, reservoirs, and protective routing. Lines should not be kinked, stretched, trapped, or left to rub on sharp edges. A leak check using an appropriate safe method can reveal escaping air at fittings or valves. Do not place hands near moving suspension parts during height changes.
Ride height affects driveline angles, axle position, tyre clearance, brake-line slack, and body stability. Request the specified ride-height setting and evidence that the truck reaches it. If a remanufactured or refurbished truck has a replacement valve, air bag, or linkage, record the part and repeat the height check after corrective work. Check torque rods, stabilizers, and bushes
Torque rods and related locating arms keep the axle in position under acceleration, braking, and cornering. Inspect rod tubes for dents, bends, corrosion, and fresh welds. Check the bushes at both ends for tears, displacement, excessive cracking, or metal-to-metal contact. Mounting bolts, brackets, and retainers should be complete and correctly seated.
Stabilizer bars, links, clamps, and bushes deserve the same attention. A damaged or loose stabilizer system can increase body roll and allow noise or movement that is difficult to identify after the truck reaches its destination. Look for polished contact areas, worn bush surfaces, bent links, missing fasteners, and interference with brake hoses or wiring.
Review shock absorbers and axle alignment clues
Where shock absorbers are fitted, inspect their bodies, rods, mounts, bushes, and fasteners. Oil wetness, dented bodies, damaged rod surfaces, loose mounts, or worn bushes need attention. Compare tyre wear across each axle and from side to side. Uneven shoulders, cupping, feathering, or rapid wear at one position may justify an alignment, bearing, or further suspension check.

Check clearances with the body and chassis
The suspension must move without pulling, crushing, or rubbing against brake hoses, air lines, electrical wiring, mudguards, tyre chains where used, body subframes, tanks, or toolboxes. Inspect clearance around the full axle group and at the expected normal ride height. For dump trucks, pay particular attention to spring movement, body mounts, hoist routing, and rear crossmember areas.
Inspect the surrounding chassis brackets too. Bent mounts, cracked welds, worn holes, or corrosion can make new suspension parts ineffective. If a structural concern appears, keep approval on hold until it is documented and assessed by a qualified person.
Include a controlled functional check
Request a controlled start, slow movement, braking, and turning check in a safe area. Listen for knocks, squeaks, air leaks, or metal contact. Observe whether the truck tracks straight, leans unexpectedly, or shows unusual axle movement. For air suspension, include a normal raise and settle cycle as permitted by the vehicle system. Do not conduct a road test with known suspension damage or unresolved brake, steering, tyre, or structural concerns.
Build an inspection record that can be reviewed
Keep the suspension evidence with the wider pre-shipment inspection. A useful record includes:
- Chassis number, model, axle configuration, body type, suspension type, tyre size, and inspection date
- Wide and close photographs of springs or air bags, hangers, equalizers, U-bolts, torque rods, stabilizers, shocks, brackets, lines, and fittings
- Ride-height observations and the reference specification used for the check
- Notes on cracks, corrosion, leaks, wear, loose fasteners, damaged bushes, tyre condition, and clearance concerns
- The stated repair or replacement history, with invoices or work records where available
- Corrective work, repeat measurements, and final evidence for every material concern
Approve only when the evidence fits the truck
A sound suspension inspection checks the actual chassis, suspension type, axle location, springs or air bags, locating components, brackets, clearances, tyres, and a controlled functional check. When a concern cannot be explained, measured, or corrected with clear evidence, hold approval until a qualified person has assessed it.
